Yesterday marked the release of the annual Mary Meeker Internet Trends Report for 2015, and it certainly didn't disappoint. If you didn't already know, this report is delivered yearly by Mary Meeker, who runs digital investments for the Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm of Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers. It's a comprehensive look at the entire Web, emerging trends and key insights. Not to mention being one of the most-anticipated internet reports.
We couldn't wait to read the report ourselves, and came away with plenty to contemplate, which we wanted to share with you.
Points to Ponder from 2015's Meeker Report
Security is Still a Big Issue
With over 20% of security breaches occurring as a result of lost or stolen devices and 20% from insiders, it was clear that security is still a top priority. In 7 out of 10 cases, the attack or security breach wasn't even discovered by the victim but by a third party. The report also highlighted the need for improved threat response and remediation as well as an urgent need for more skilled experts in the security field.
Europe is Missing the Mark by Miles
The top 20 Internet companies were listed according to market value, and none of them were European organisations! The USA held the prime position with 11 listings, followed by China with 6, Japan with 2 and Korea with 1. It's time for Europe to step up its game.
Note to Governments - Keep Calm and Use the Internet!
Government sectors worldwide are still lagging with regards to adopting the Internet's transformative abilities. Governments need to embrace the efficiencies and improvements the internet has to offer and join the rest of the world in making good use of them.
Advertisers Listen Up! It's Time to Go Mobile and Get Out of Print
Right now advertising spend is broadly aligned with eyeball time across a number of sectors, with two big exceptions: print and mobile advertising. Print advertising sees a spend that vastly outweighs eyeball time while mobile isn't seeing enough spend - which means there's a huge opportunity for marketers to capitalise on in that sector. Mobile is where it's all happening!
Enterprise Software is Transforming
As consumers interact more and more frequently with applications and software specifically tailored for unrivalled user experience, their expectations of the software they use within their professional lives increases. With this growing demand, we are seeing many companies making the shift from legacy software to those that mirror consumer experiences.
Teachers Need to Get Online
Many teacher-led programs and curriculums are struggling to stay current as technology progress, often quickly falling to an "out of date" status. Educational institutions and educators alike need to move towards embracing the internet as a critical learning resource.
Vertical Viewing is On the Up
As people choose to view content on their smartphone displays, vertical screens and content are on the up. An estimated 29% of peoples' daily time is spent looking at vertical displays - a rise from 5% in 2010.
Smartphones and Millennials are Inseparable
87% state that their smartphones never leave their sides, while 80% saying it’s the first device they reach for every morning. Smartphone manufacturers will need to keep upping the ante on their device camera offerings as well, with 44% of Millennials admitting to using their smartphone's camera at least once a day.
These are just a few of the insights we found notable in the report, but there were hordes more. We'd love to hear what insights you found thought-provoking and your views on them, so please comment below and let us know!
