How to Structure a Great Technical Project

By Tom Redmond - August 01, 2014

blog-2We’ve long been recognised as a great project management organisation, and this is based on a track record of delivering projects on time and in budget. So how do we do it?

We use a simple methodology, which is Plan-Design-Implement-Operate. We bring this approach to bear on all projects.

The key stages to a successful implementation of any project are:

Plan: Define in detail and gain consensus around the project. Define the requirement in detail. Included in this is what the objectives are. What will success look like? How will we know we’ve finished? The output from this exercise is all of the information necessary to design the solution and draw up the implementation and support plan.

Design: Identify the elements which are going to deliver the project. Not only the technology, but how it is delivered, including architecture, product choices, implementation plan, training plan, project controls, etc. The output here is a working system design and implementation plan.

Implement: Establish the roadmap for implementation of the project. Select the products, identify the resources, schedule the projects, and implement. Manage and measure progress, and act accordingly.

Operate: Run the solution as business as usual, and review. Make sure that the solution works, and is delivering the benefits expected of it. Make sure the support in place is appropriate.

Each stage of the project is distinct, and has a clear output. The project team may be different for each stage and, and individuals may join or leave the team as the project progresses. Team members at each stage may be internal or external to the organisation, or a mixture of the two. For instance, a project to introduce a new field technology for a sales team may have sales team members as part of the planning team, but the team may lose these members and replace them with a third party implementation organisation at the implementation phase.

This is one project framework and we are happy to share it. Whatever you do, make sure you have a project framework, and use it to help structure your project. This one is simple and effective. It has suited us down the years and continues to be relevant today. If you’d like to understand more about our project management style, please contact us.
