If you are looking to develop a successful BYOD strategy here are the 7 major components you should consider addressing.
1. User Experience
To be sustainable, BYOD policies must meet the needs of employees and IT. From an employee’s point of view, they want to quickly access the information they need to do their job – from any device, from anywhere and at the time they choose.
2. Security Model
IT tends to focus on security and the answer to this question. What users do I trust with what information to ensure that the Company is protected from security risks, hacking and information theft?
3. Device Choice
With the consumerisation of IT, it is impossible for IT Departments to test and approve any device. Employees must be given clear guidelines of the type of devices that will be allowed to access networks.
4. App Choice
Like the device choice, employees will expect a choice of Apps. IT may need to restrict the number of Apps available but still give users choice.
5. User Policies
Employees and IT should have a clear understanding of the implications of any BYOD Program. These policies should include liability, insurance, privacy, procedures for when a device is lost or stolen, to name just a few etc
6. Leverage
When building a BYOD solution be clear to understand what your network is capable of today in terms of providing the security and functionality that you require. Many solutions simply replicate functionality that already exists in your network.
7. Vision
You should also have tomorrow’s IT vision in mind when developing today’s BYOD strategy. For example, video and collaboration are expected to put massive strains on corporate networks. Will you be ready for this?
